How to build a budget with AI from your real transactions

Updated 2026-10-01

Most budgets fail because they start from guesses. When your assistant can read your actual transactions, it can build a budget from what you really spend and show you where the room is. This guide gives the prompts to do that.

Start from the last three months

Ask: Set me a realistic monthly budget by category based on what I actually spent over the last three months, not what I wish I spent. This gives you a baseline built on facts.

Find where the money went

Ask: What did I spend the most on in the last 90 days? Show me the top 5 categories and how they have trended month over month. Look for the category that grew while you were not watching.

Set a goal and work backwards

Ask: I want to save $5,000 by next summer. Look at my spending and tell me the three specific cuts that would get me there with the least pain. The assistant can check each cut against your real history, which is more convincing than a generic tip.

Check your cushion

Ask: How many months of expenses do I have covered by my current balances? What would a 3-month emergency fund need to be?

Keep it going monthly

At the end of each month ask for a one-page recap: income, spending, biggest categories, and what changed. Comparing against the budget takes one prompt instead of a spreadsheet session.

A note on accuracy

Categories come from your bank and Plaid, so they can be imperfect. Ask the assistant to list the transactions behind any number that looks off. The output is analysis of your own data, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT or Claude make a budget from my bank transactions?
Yes, when it can read your transactions through a connector such as Simpl Finance MCP. It then builds the budget from your real spending history.
Does the AI change anything in my accounts?
No. The connector is read-only.
Can I get the budget as a spreadsheet?
Ask the assistant to export it as a table or spreadsheet. Whether it can produce a file depends on your assistant and plan.

Ask your AI about your actual money
