How to find your recurring subscriptions with AI
Updated 2026-10-01
Subscriptions are easy to forget and easy to raise prices on. Your bank transactions already contain every recurring charge, so an assistant that can read them can list subscriptions, total the monthly cost, and flag charges that changed. Here is how to do that in a few prompts.
Step 1: list every recurring charge
Ask: Find every subscription or recurring charge in my transactions and total up what they cost me per month. Ask for a table with merchant, amount, and how often it charges.
Step 2: look for price increases
Ask: Did any of my recurring bills go up in price this year? Show me the before and after. This is the quickest way to catch a streaming or software plan that quietly raised its price.
Step 3: catch charges worth a second look
Ask: Are there any charges in the last 30 days I should look at twice, such as duplicates, unfamiliar merchants, or amounts that jumped from last month?
Step 4: decide what to cancel
Ask the assistant to rank subscriptions by cost and by how recently you appear to have used the service, based on related spending. It can only see charges, not usage, so confirm before you cancel anything.
What you need
An assistant connected to your accounts. With Simpl Finance MCP that means linking a bank through Plaid and adding the connector to Claude or ChatGPT. The connector is read-only, so the assistant can find charges but cannot cancel anything or move money.
Frequently asked questions
- Can the AI cancel subscriptions for me?
- No. The connector is read-only, so the assistant can list and analyze charges but cannot cancel anything or move money.
- How far back can it look?
- Any date range your bank connection provides. Ask for the last 6 or 12 months to catch annual charges.
- Will it catch annual subscriptions?
- Only if the range you ask about includes the charge. Use a 12-month range to see yearly renewals.
