How to connect ChatGPT to your bank account

Updated 2026-10-01

ChatGPT can answer questions about your real spending once it can read your transactions. It does that through a custom connector that speaks the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This guide walks through adding Simpl Finance MCP to ChatGPT, which gives it read-only access to your accounts through Plaid.

What you need before you start

  • A Simpl Finance MCP account with at least one bank linked through Plaid.
  • A ChatGPT plan that allows custom MCP connectors. Availability depends on your plan and changes over time, so check the Developer mode setting in your account.
  • Your connector server URL, which is shown on the Connect page of your Simpl dashboard.

Add the connector to ChatGPT

Menu names move between ChatGPT releases, so treat these as what to look for rather than an exact path.

  1. 1

    Turn on Developer mode

Click your profile icon, open Settings, then Security and login, and switch on Developer mode. Custom MCP connectors stay hidden until you do.

  2. 2

    Create a new connection

Open Plugins and click the + button to add a connector.

  3. 3

    Fill in the details

Name it Simpl Finance, describe it as personal finance and bank transaction analysis, set Connection to Public endpoint, and paste your server URL.

  4. 4

    Click Create connection

ChatGPT reads the server to work out how to sign you in. This takes a moment.

  5. 5

    Sign in and approve

You are sent to Simpl Finance to sign in and approve access. If ChatGPT asks for a token instead, generate one on the Connect page and paste the token alone, without typing the word Bearer.

  6. 6

    Review the tools

ChatGPT lists the tools and permissions. All four are reads: transactions, balances, accounts, and spending by category.

  7. 7

    Select it in a chat

Start a new chat and pick Simpl Finance from the tools menu.

What to ask first

Start with a question that has a checkable answer, so you can confirm the numbers match your bank. For example: How much did I spend on groceries last month? Then move on to subscriptions, fees and budgets.

What ChatGPT can and cannot do with the connector

The connector exposes four read tools. There is no tool to move money, open an account, or change anything at your bank, so ChatGPT cannot do those things even if asked. ChatGPT also never sees your bank login or the Plaid access token.
