How to connect Claude to your bank account
Updated 2026-10-01
Claude can answer questions about your actual spending when it can read your transactions. You give it that access with a custom connector built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Simpl Finance MCP is a hosted MCP server that exposes your bank data to Claude as read-only tools.
Set it up in three steps
- 1
Connect your bank
Sign in to Simpl Finance MCP and link your bank through Plaid. It takes about a minute and your bank password never reaches Simpl.
- 2
Copy two values
The Connect page shows a server URL and a private server token. The token is shown once, so copy it when it appears.
- 3
Add the connector in Claude
In Claude, open Settings and find Connectors. Add a custom connector, paste the server URL, and when asked for a credential paste your server token.
Test it
Ask Claude: What accounts do I have connected, and at which banks? If it lists your accounts, the connector works. Then try a spending question such as: How much did I spend on restaurants and food delivery last month versus groceries?
What Claude can read
- Transactions for any date range, with merchant, amount, date, category and bank.
- Current balances across every connected account.
- Accounts and the banks they belong to.
- Spending totals grouped by category, ranked largest first.
Other MCP clients
Any client that supports remote MCP servers can connect. Point it at the server URL, using the Streamable HTTP transport, and send your token as an Authorization: Bearer header. Four tools should appear.
If something does not work
If Claude cannot see the connector, remove it and add it again with the same URL. If you lost your token, generate a new one on the Connect page. Regenerating stops the old token immediately, so update every assistant that used it.
Frequently asked questions
- Is connecting Claude to my bank account safe?
- The connector is read-only by construction: it has no tool that can move money or change anything at your bank. Claude never sees your bank login or the Plaid access token. See the safety guide for details.
- Do I need to know how to code?
- No. Setup is copying a server URL and a token into Claude's connector settings.
- Can I connect more than one bank?
- Yes. Every query spans all connected accounts, and one connector covers them all.
- Can I disconnect?
- Yes, at any time. Disconnecting a bank revokes its token with Plaid, and you can regenerate your connector token whenever you want.
