Is it safe to connect your bank account to an AI assistant?

Updated 2026-10-01

It depends on what the connection allows. An AI that can read your transactions is very different from one that can act on your account. The safest setups limit the assistant by design rather than by asking the model to behave. Here is how Simpl Finance MCP handles it, and what risk remains.

Read-only is a design limit, not a promise

The connector exposes four tools: transactions, balances, accounts, and spending by category. Every one is a read. There is no tool to move money, open an account, or change anything at your bank. The capability is absent rather than gated behind a confirmation, so a confused or manipulated model has nothing to misuse.

The assistant never sees your credentials

Your bank login is handled by Plaid, and Simpl receives a scoped access token rather than your password. The assistant receives account data and nothing else. It never has your bank login, and it never has the Plaid access token.

How the stored data is protected

  • Bank access tokens are encrypted with AES before they are stored.
  • Your connector token is stored only as a SHA-256 hash, so it is shown to you exactly once.
  • A connector token resolves to one account, every query is scoped to its owner, and requests are rate limited per account.

You can see what the assistant asked for

Each request is logged with a timestamp, the tool called, and whether it succeeded. The full history is in your dashboard, so nothing happens out of sight.

Risks that remain

Read access still means the assistant sees your transactions, and your AI provider processes whatever the assistant retrieves under that provider's own privacy terms. Check the data and retention settings in Claude or ChatGPT before you connect.

Treat your connector token like a password. If it leaks, regenerate it and the old one stops working at once. You can also disconnect a bank at any time, which revokes its token with Plaid.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI assistant steal money through a read-only connector?
No. A read-only connector has no tool that can initiate a transfer, payment or account change, so the assistant cannot do those things regardless of what it is asked.
Does the AI see my bank username and password?
No. The bank login happens with Plaid. The assistant only receives account data.
What happens if my connector token leaks?
Regenerate it on the Connect page. The old token stops working immediately.
Is this financial advice?
No. Simpl Finance MCP gives your assistant access to your own financial data. It is not financial, investment or tax advice.
