What is a personal finance MCP server?

Updated 2026-10-01

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants call outside tools. A personal finance MCP server is one that exposes your financial data, such as transactions and balances, as tools an assistant can use. Instead of exporting a CSV and pasting it into a chat, you let the assistant ask for exactly the numbers it needs.

How it works

Your bank connects to the server through an aggregator such as Plaid. The server exposes a small set of tools. When you ask a question, the assistant decides which tool to call, the server returns the data, and the assistant writes the answer. Because the server defines the tools, it also defines the limits of what the assistant can do.

What Simpl Finance MCP exposes

  • Transactions for any date range, with merchant, amount, category and bank.
  • Balances across all connected accounts.
  • The list of connected accounts.
  • Spending totals by category.

What to look for in any finance MCP server

  • Read-only tools, with no ability to move money.
  • Bank credentials handled by an aggregator, never by the server or the assistant.
  • Encrypted storage of access tokens and a way to revoke them.
  • A log of what the assistant requested.
  • Support for the clients you use, such as Claude and ChatGPT.

Hosted or self-hosted

You can run an open-source MCP server yourself, which means managing your own Plaid credentials, hosting and security. A hosted server such as Simpl Finance MCP trades that effort for a monthly fee: you link a bank, paste a URL and token into your assistant, and you are done.

Frequently asked questions

What does MCP stand for?
Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to tools and data.
Which assistants support MCP?
Claude and ChatGPT both support custom MCP connectors, along with a growing list of other clients. Availability depends on your plan.
Is a finance MCP server the same as a budgeting app?
No. A budgeting app gives you its own dashboards. An MCP server gives the assistant you already use access to your data, so you ask questions in plain language.
